Dorset Echo Article: RAC Saddle Club sees rise in alternative education programme

RAC Saddle Club CLTH

Bovington-based RAC Saddle Club has reported a rapid rise increase of students using its equine-assisted learning programme, an alternative educational provision.

Students come from a variety of schools across the region including Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester, Wey Valley Academy in Weymouth, and the Swanage School.

Yard manager Steph Buchanan said: “We have had over 120 young people enrolled in our BHS Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) course, and enrolment continues to grow daily.

“Despite not actively advertising the programme, we’ve experienced a 30 per cent rise in inquiries.”

Steph highlights the transformative impact of equine-assisted learning, noting how it helps young people build trust and patience as they engage with horses.

Students not only gain self-esteem by overcoming their fears but also benefit physically through improved balance, coordination, and core strength when they choose to ride.

Wey Valley Academy’s Mark Salmon is keen to raise awareness of the programme’s importance: “The RAC Equine Centre and its Changing Lives Through Horses Courses are making a significant difference for young people at risk.

“Through this alternative provision, they develop essential personal, social, and equine skills that help them re-engage with learning and explore future career opportunities.

“Many have reported substantial improvements in their self-esteem.”

Steph said that several students have shown exceptional progress and a strong interest in working with horses.

She added: “We’re excited to share that three of our young people are now on track to pursue BHS awards, which will lead to industry qualifications.”

The programme operates with a blend of volunteers and paid non-teaching coaches.

Mark added: “The staff and volunteers at the RAC centre possess outstanding equine knowledge and experience, but what truly stands out is their kindness and empathy towards every young person, regardless of their situation.”

With a dedicated team of volunteers, the centre provides one-to-one attention and small group sessions.

For those interested in learning how the Changing Lives Through Horses programme can help, the Saddle Club encourages inquiries.
